For those of you who have already bought or plan to buy Asus Eee PC, it is a good idea to do an update on the operating system because the version of Xandros Linux that is being shipped currently has a security hole that needs to be patched. If you are behind a firewall or proxy it is probably not that big of a deal however it is a good idea to keep your software patched.

To do the update all you need to do is go into settings and Add/Remove Programs, it will automatically check for updates (assuming you are connected to the internet) and it will let you know which software has an update available, update the ones that you need, and leave the rest. For BIOS updates, you will usually not need to do any updates, unless of course you plan on hacking and using your Eee PC for some other reason.

After some minor delays due to manufacturing issues it seems that you can now buy Asus Eee 8G from Amazon. Amazon has a listing for a black Asus Eee PC with 1GB RAM, 8GB SSD and all the other regular features on the Eee PC. If you buy Asus Eee 8G you will receive it in 3-6 weeks according to the listing, however, Amazon is notorious in overestimating its shipping times and there is a good chance if you buy Asus Eee 8G from Amazon that you may receive it before the minimum 3 weeks.

The Asus 8G Eee PC had some flash-based storage issues so it has been off the market for some time. But now it seems you will will be able to buy Asus Eee from vendors, Amazon being the first one to list it on their site. Asus announced in early February that due to a minor hardware issue relating to the flash-based storage there would be a delay in shipments. Of course, this drove the price at which people could buy Asus Eee 8G up. On eBay they were going for $700, however you can now buy Asus Eee 8G on Amazon from $542.99.

Have you been searching around for the 8gb Asus Eee PC? Well you may have noticed that it is quite difficult to find one these days. However, that's about to change. Asus stated that the reason it has been in short supply is because there is a problem with manufacturing the RAM.

They have now fixed the problem and should be shipping the 8GB model in the second quarter. It's still a little bit of a wait, but at least we know when it is coming. For now, you can just order the 4GB version and buy a large 8gb+ SDHC removable drive. Or you can check out eBay where they will have the 8GB model.

Asus is a major computer company, many non-techie people may have not heard of them before the Eee PC, but they have been a major force in motherboards and other computer components for awhile. The Eee PC was their first mainstream product that really hit big. Now Asus has plans of expanding their line into an E-DT (DeskTop), E-TV, and E-Monitor.

The E-Monitor is supposed to be similar to Apple iMac and Dell XPS. It will have a built in TV-tuner and retail at around $500. The E-DT is will be a basic desktop PC that will retail at around $200. The last family member will be the E-TV, which will be a 42 inch LCD with a built in Linux PC, it will retail at more than $200. On the whole, Asus is really making strides into some new markets. The only thing I can say is that Asus needs to be careful in building it brand though. The PC enthusiasts know it as a respectable and dependable brand, but the new consumers don't.

If you were waiting for  8GB Asus Eee, it seems you will have to wait some more. There are some rumors about saying that Asus is delaying some shipments due to shortage in flash memory. It always seems to be the memory. I guess its good that the Eee wasn't out of stock during the Christmas season, otherwise that would have been a real problem for Asus.

In related news, Asus has lowered its sales forecast for Q1 for the Eee PC from 1 million to 700,000. The lowered forecast may be due to the unforeseen shortage. Also, there may be more shortages to come that may be in the pipeline but are not yet here.

Another review has come out from a blogger at Popular Mechanics which is a very popular magazine in the USA. This blogger has tested every small device under the sun especially since he loves to blog on the go. He has tested the Sony UX490 and the Nokia N810, but found both of them unsatisfactory.

The Asus Eee PC hit the spot for him. His first impression was the exceptional price at only $399 for a higher end model. He found the screen better than the competitors despite it being only 7.5 inches and he was surprised at how good the speakers were. Overall, he thinks it's the first affordable ultra portable that he can use for blogging and web browsing on the go.
